A nose reshaping consultation answers one question first: can your goal be met with filler, or does it need surgery? Non-surgical nose reshaping can smooth a small bump, balance minor irregularities, or refine the profile, but it can’t make the nose smaller or improve breathing. Your consultation at our Guilford or Mystic office is where that line gets drawn honestly, before any treatment is planned.
What non-surgical nose reshaping can and can’t do
Non-surgical nose reshaping (sometimes called a “liquid rhinoplasty”) uses small, carefully placed amounts of hyaluronic acid filler to change how the nose looks in profile. It works by adding volume, not removing it.
It may help if you want to:
- Camouflage a small bump by softening the areas around it
- Smooth a minor dip or irregularity along the bridge
- Improve the appearance of mild asymmetry
- Subtly refine the angle of the tip in profile
It can’t:
- Make the nose smaller or narrower
- Correct a large hump or significant crookedness
- Improve breathing or treat a deviated septum
- Deliver a permanent change (filler breaks down over time, and how long it lasts varies by person)
If your goals fall in the second list, filler isn’t the right tool, and we’ll tell you so.
What happens during your consultation
A good consultation is a conversation first and an examination second. Here’s what to expect.
Your goals. You’ll talk through what bothers you about your nose and what you’d like to change. Photos of your own profile, or examples of the look you like, are helpful.
A close look at your anatomy. Your provider will evaluate your profile, the shape of your bridge and tip, your skin thickness, and how your nose relates to your chin, lips, and forehead. Sometimes the best change to the profile isn’t in the nose at all.
Your history. Be ready to share any prior nose surgery or injury, previous filler treatments, medications, and supplements. Past surgery changes the anatomy inside the nose, which matters when deciding whether filler is a safe option for you.
An honest recommendation. You’ll leave knowing whether non-surgical reshaping fits your goals, what a realistic result looks like, and what the risks are. If filler isn’t a good fit, you’ll hear that plainly, along with the reasons.
Questions worth asking:
- How often do you inject the nose specifically?
- What result is realistic for my anatomy?
- What happens if there’s a complication, and how would you manage it?
- Can the filler be dissolved if I don’t like the result?
Why the nose requires extra care
We think you should know this before you book anywhere: the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has not approved dermal fillers for injection into the nose. The FDA’s overview of dermal fillers lists the nose among areas where filler use is not FDA-approved. That means non-surgical nose reshaping is an off-label use of an approved product, a decision made between you and a qualified medical provider.
The nose also has a complex network of blood vessels. The FDA notes that the most serious risk with any filler is accidental injection into a blood vessel. It’s uncommon, but it can cause tissue damage, vision problems including blindness, or stroke. That’s why anatomy knowledge, technique, and a clear plan for managing complications matter more for the nose than almost anywhere else on the face.
Hyaluronic acid fillers can typically be dissolved with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, which is one reason they’re the filler type generally used for this treatment. Ask any provider whether they keep it on hand.
Who performs nose reshaping at The Collins Center
Non-surgical treatments at The Collins Center are performed by our physician assistant and nurses, each personally selected and trained by Dr. Beth Collins, a double board-certified plastic surgeon, under her oversight.
Injection training is a core part of Dr. Collins’s work. She is a Platinum-level Allergan injector and a former Allergan physician trainer, and she co-founded the Coastal Aesthetic Training Institute, which teaches other medical professionals safe injection technique from our Mystic office. That surgical and teaching background shapes how our team plans every treatment: anatomy first, conservative amounts, and a natural result as the goal.
When surgery is the better answer
Filler adds volume. When the real goal is to reduce size, straighten a significantly crooked nose, remove a large hump, or breathe better, those changes require surgical rhinoplasty performed by a board-certified surgeon. Using filler to approximate a result it can’t deliver usually leads to a nose that looks heavier, not better.
If surgery is the right path for your goals, we’ll tell you that at your consultation rather than steer you toward a treatment that won’t get you there. Our guide to choosing a plastic surgeon in Connecticut covers how to evaluate any surgeon you’re considering.
What recovery typically looks like
Non-surgical nose reshaping usually involves little recovery time, but it isn’t nothing. Common short-term effects include:
- Swelling
- Redness
- Bruising
- Tenderness at the injection sites
These usually settle within days to a couple of weeks. Your provider will give you aftercare instructions and tell you what to avoid in the first days after treatment.
Call the office right away if you notice skin that turns pale, white, or dusky; pain that gets worse instead of better; or any change in your vision. These can be signs of a blood vessel problem and need prompt attention.
How to prepare
- Bring a few photos of your profile and any examples of the look you like.
- Write down your medical history, including any nose surgery, injury, or previous filler.
- List all medications and supplements you take.
- Plan to use the consultation to decide, not to commit. It’s fine to go home and think it over.

Frequently asked questions
Is non-surgical nose reshaping permanent?
No. Hyaluronic acid filler is gradually broken down by the body, so results are temporary, and how long they last varies from person to person. Your provider can discuss what to expect for you.
Is filler in the nose FDA-approved?
No. The FDA has not approved dermal fillers for injection into the nose, so this is an off-label use of an FDA-approved product. That’s one reason choosing an experienced, medically supervised provider matters.
Can filler fix breathing problems or a deviated septum?
No. Filler only changes the outside shape of the nose. Breathing problems and structural issues inside the nose require surgical evaluation.
Can filler make my nose look smaller?
It can’t reduce size. In the right patient, smoothing a bump or balancing the profile can make the nose look more refined, but the nose itself doesn’t get smaller.
